TJ Bummers is a restaurant known for more than its menu. It is a place where friends gather, where visitors get a tour of history. Eating at TJ Bummers is like a dining experience within a museum, with the exception of the progressive menu. The motif is akin to having a dinner at grandma’s on a summer evening. Walking through the back door into the kitchen, past the numerous jars of canned carrots, peppers, and corn, family history displayed on the walls in pictures, and dinner that is as much a treat for the senses of sight and smell as it is for taste.

TJ Bummers is a landmark garnishing the southwest corner of Broadway and Front Street, a location it has held since the restaurant was known as Country Kitchen in the 1960s and 70s. The current owner, Todd Rich, started at the restaurant as a dishwasher while in high school. His family moved to Sterling in 1980.

His father worked on the railroad, based on Casper, Wyo., and his mother was a hair stylist for Das Locken Haus. When Todd completed high school in Sterling, his parents, Karen and Danny, purchased the restaurant.

“We had absolutely no restaurant experience whatsoever,” Karen said.

Todd worked in Yellowstone as a cook after graduating from high school. His parents encouraged him to come back to Sterling for the restaurant.

The name of the restaurant was changed to TJ Bummers. Karen said the family joke at the time is that if they call it “Bummers,” the food will have to be good.

“People thought we were a chain,” Karen said. She said people would take pictures of the outside of the building. The inside, the rest of the historical tour, is a collection of history Karen has collected from various places. Each piece on display is related to somewhere Karen has traveled, a shop she visited.“It got to the point we didn’t have any room,” she said.

The decorations include canned foods, gasoline pumps, black and white “family” photos, sports memorabilia, filling station signs, advertisement signs, toys such as pedal tractors and the list goes on. The gas pumps come from Joes, Colorado, the juke box from a store in Golden, the stove just inside the door is from the Wernsmans and a switchboard beside the stove is from Elk Mountain, Wyo. It was used at the first hotel in the community, a 13-room facility.

They have considered expanding the business. It has seen some improvements since the Riches purchased it. The original entrance is where the second door is, and the seating at the northwest corner of the facility was updated a few years ago. They also added flat screen televisions a few years ago.

The menu has a wide variety from their family omelets and skillet breakfasts to steaks and ribs. The breakfast menu is available all day, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The future plans for TJ Bummers is simple: keep doing what has worked in the past, and focusing on the needs of the customers. Todd said some of the menu has changed over time, customers would then want an item that had been taken off the list.

One of the new menu items is also a challenge for the hearty eaters in the region. Akin to cable television’s “Man v. Food” with Adam Richman, take the 12-egg omelet challenge. Finish the full meal in an hour and it’s on the house. Miss the mark and you owe the house a $20 bill.

TJ Bummers, “Bummers” as many people know it, is located at 203 Broadway, at the intersection of the Broadway Shopping Center.
