The Historic Union Depot -

on the National Register of Historic Buildings

The Sterling Chamber of Commerce was officially incorporated on December 7th, 1937.  The organization continued to grow and evolve, as did the surrounding community.   In the early 1970's the name of the organization was changed to the Logan County Chamber of Commerce to better reflect the community we continue to serve.

Our Building's History:

The Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome you to Sterling's own "Retired" Union Pacific Railroad depot, a symbol of Northeast Colorado's pride and rich heritage.

The Union Pacific-owned depot was built in 1902 and was the focus of travel until passenger service was discontinued in the early 1970's. In 1982 the unique Romanesque revival structure was donated by The Union Pacific Railroad to The City of Sterling. Funds were raised through grants and civic organizations' donation drives to move the depot. In 1984 it was relocated to it's present location at Front and Main Streets. Renovation began in 1989 and was completed by the following year.

The bricks that surround the building are the original pavers, which came from the old site. The coal cart and baggage wagon were donated by local citizens, and were originally in the Union Pacific yard. The benches in the main room had to be brought through the large oval windows after the building was moved.

The depot is now entered on The National Register of Historic Places.

You might notice that the building looks a tad bit shorter now than it did then.  You are - in fact - correct.  The coal storage was eliminated during the move, but you'd never know it by looking at the building today!  If you haven't done so already, stop by 109. North Front Street today for a tour!
