Three quarters of the biggest clients are acquired only through relationship building.

The vast majority of job openings are never advertised.

These two statements prove one thing: in order to be successful, you must be involved. As professionals, we have to be active, energetic and engaged in our communities. We have to get out of the cubicle, jump off the couch and embrace the world around us.

Involvement helps you find new clients. It taps you into the job-market grapevine. It allows you to be “top-of-mind” in your profession.

Simply put, involvement helps you reach your goals. As long as you don’t burn the candle and both ends, being involved can actually make you more effective in your work.

But what’s the best way to get involved? There are many options, and what you choose to do is entirely up to you. To make your choice a little easier, here is Jeff Beals, Author of “Self Marketing Power”, list of the Top 5 Ways to Get Involved:

1. Chambers of Commerce – offer an array of programs designed for professionals. Chambers provide an opportunity to learn from and network with professionals from a wide variety of businesses from all parts of your city. They are great for client acquisition, B2B sales and for bolstering your career opportunities.
2. Professional & Trade Associations – bring people of one profession together for educational and networking purposes. These groups are particularly useful for career advancement assuming you want to stay in your current field.
3. Philanthropy & Non-Profit Boards – allow you to make the world a better place while fostering friendships with fellow board members and philanthropists who can help you reach your business and career goals.
4. Politics – include interest groups, political parties and election campaigns. Political involvement is “hands-on” and allows you to grow close with fellow members as you work toward a common cause.
5. Service Clubs & Fraternal Organizations – are groups such as Rotary, Kiwanis, Freemasons, Knights of Columbus, etc. These organizations can be demanding of your time but allow you to build meaningful relationships with fellow members. People who join these groups tend to be social, caring “go-getters” who have done well in their careers.

The Logan County Chamber of Commerce is hosting an event for the entire community — the Spring Fling — this Saturday, May 2.

Until then, be sure to visit local merchants to register to win prizes. Drawings for the Spring Fling contest will be held throughout the day Saturday.

The Chamber Merchant Committee is unveiling its “Shop The L” campaign. The campaign features local businesses in the Broadway Plaza, downtown and West Main Street — the three main shopping areas of Sterling. Each of these areas will have their own events throughout the day. The Sterling Fire Department and Colorado State Patrol will be out at the High Plains Shopping Center. Colorado State Patrol staff will be on hand to check child safety seats. There will also be a bicycle safety check station. The Broadway Plaza will have a bit of a carnival atmosphere with a dunk tank, cotton candy and of course snow cones. A farmers’ market is planned for the downtown business region. And Clarence’s Corner will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

BOB FM will be doing remote broadcasts from various locations throughout town Saturday.

In addition, all three locations are planning sidewalk sales throughout the day.

Also, Prairie Express has agreed to offer free rides throughout the day.

This is just the beginning of the “Shop The L” campaign. I am working with the Merchants Committee to develop a map, a quick guide, to assist people in finding a specific restaurant, office, clothing store or mechanics shop. The map will assist the community newcomer as well as the lifelong resident. The plan is to distribute these maps to hotels, convenience stores and restaurants. The goal is to make it easier for a person to suggest a Sterling restaurant or retail business.

The plan is based on the simplest of marketing; who is the first person a visitor will talk to when visiting a town? Frequently, that person is the waitress , fuel attendant/cashier or hotel clerk who will or will not promote the local community decides for the traveler if a place like Sterling is worth visiting. With a quick-reference map, most anyone can be a positive ambassador for our community.

The Merchant Committee is also planning on a back-to-school event and a Christmas shopping event. Long-term goals for the committee include placement of billboards promoting the Sterling community.

Businesses are still welcome to be included on the “Shop The L” map. Call me at 522-5070, or email me at execdir@logancountychamber.com.

Outstanding Logan County citizens and businesses receive recognition at the Logan County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Membership Meeting and Awards Banquet last week.

This years group of award recipients is one word, phenomenal, said Jared Sonnenberg, Logan County Chamber president. Logan County and this community would not be what it is without the people being honored tonight; they symbolize not only what it means to be part of community, but have the community be part of you.

The Citizen of the Year award is given for outstanding leadership, commitment and service to the cultural and economic health and welfare of Logan County. This award goes to someone who has demonstrated support to Logan County through significant contributions including time, volunteerism, financial donations, in-kind donations or the involvement and promotion of programs and projects that truly make a difference in Logan County.

This years recipients were Chris and Joy Dinsdale.
They are neighbors and friends to Logan County and its citizens, Sonnenberg said. This husband and wife team is steadfastly dedicated to this town and community and certainly deserving of this award.

He said they are people of action, doing in many cases what other people arent capable of doing for themselves.

This is very generous, thank you very much, Joy said. This award is especially gratifying to us to because it was awarded by you, our peers and our community.

The Business Person of the Year award is presented to an outstanding individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication, time and service to Logan County and support of the Chamber. Someone who has demonstrated outstanding leadership ability and has visibly contributed to the success of programs that benefit Logan County, both personally and through his/her business.

This years recipient was Dr. Jennifer Goble, counselor and owner of the Old Library Inn.

This years recipient definitely fits the description of philanthropic business person, Sonnenberg said. Her voluntary and financial support of service groups and her dedication to excellence in her own business are just fragments of how deeply this person has touched the community.
Goble said she was humbled and honored to receive the award.

I dont think I deserve this any more than all of you in this room, but I thank you very much, she said.

The Volunteer/Diplomat of the Year award is given in appreciation for exceptional leadership, dedication, time and service to the Logan County Chamber. This award is given to someone who has generously contributed time, talent and energy to Chamber activities, events, projects and committees and contributed to the success of furthering the mission of the Chamber and Logan County.

This years recipient was Elda Lousberg.

As an outstanding lady, this person always takes the extra step, said Kim Sellers, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.

She also said Lousberg is always there to lend a helping hand.

Im really honored and humbled to receive this award, Lousberg said. I believe in Logan County and the Logan County Chamber of Commerce.

The Business of the Year award is given in appreciation for outstanding support, exceptional leadership and recognition of service to Logan County and the Chamber. This award is given to a business that has demonstrated support to the Chamber and the community through significant contributions including time, financial donations, in-kind donations or the involvement and promotion of programs and projects.

This years recipient was Wells Fargo Bank.

The business who is awarded this award is truly a role model for the business community, Sellers said. They take great pride in being not just a bank in town, but being a member of our community.

Brad Anderson, Wells Fargo’s market president for Sterling, said it was humbling to receive this award. Were happy to be able to support the community and the Chamber, he said. We look forward to another great year.
